SURPRISE, SURPRISE! Bus Ridership Down in London…

London transit ridership dropped by more than two million in 2009, a loss of fare revenue worth about $3.1 million, a report to the transit commission states.

London Transit Commission head Larry Ducharme is making his pitch for the transit operating budget on the heels of a 29-day strike that dealt a big blow to revenues.

But the return of buses to the streets of London after the strike hasn’t translated into more riders — about 40,000 less people are using the bus in the first two weeks of January 2010 than were using the bus in the first two weeks of 2009.

Although ridership was going up in in 2008 and 2009, it fell, mainly because of the strike and because of the faltering economy, the report, which the commission will discuss on Wednesday, says.

Among the other findings in the report, which looks at the 2009 operating year:

  • Total annual ridership was 10% lower than predicted. That’s about 2.1 million less riders.
  • Between January and October, ridership exceeded projections by 1.5%
  • In November and December, the period of the strike, ridership was down by 2.4 million — mainly because buses weren’t running.
  • The loss of 2.1 million riders translates into a fare revenue loss of $3.1 million
  • The loss of 2.1 million riders means a loss of between $800,000 and $900,000 in provincial gas tax money for 2010-2011.
  • In the first two weeks of January, about 40,000 less people were riding the bus — a 10% drop — over the same period last year.

Recently the LTC has said London Transit is a leader, not just among [transit] systems across the province, but across the country as well “, which I find is a pretty bold statement. However I have noticed an 110%  improvement in their service since 2005 – the year I started to take the bus daily to Fanshawe College. Today there was an article in the London Free Press talking about the LTC getting bike racks on some bus routes, as a pilot project. I believe this is definitely a great step in the right directing giving people another opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle. It is a great idea for those who would like to go somewhere where the bus doesn’t go, you can now take the bus as close to your destination as possible and then you can bike. This would of come in handy for me when I did a Co-op at The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority as there is no bus that goes all the way out by Fanshawe Lake. Another good example would be professionals who work Downtown who would like to live a healthier lifestyle but not come in sweaty into work, they could take their bike on the bus then after work bike back(HOWEVER, it is interesting to see that not one of the 4 selected bus routes, for the pilot project, actually go downtown.) The article says that the 10 Wonderland will be one of the bus routes participating in the pilot project, interesting choice with Springbank park being one of the stops on the route. From an Urban Design point of view this is a great development that will help us  become a more sustainable city.

London Transit riders will soon be able to rack their bikes on some bus routes and take them on trips across the city. Stainless steel bike racks will be mounted on the front of 40 buses serving four major routes in London, transit commissioners decided yesterday. They approved the $25,000 pilot project after leaving their board room and inspecting two racks mounted on buses in the commission’s garage. Combining the ability to ride public transit with cycling extends mobility, an option already found on some big-city Canadian transit services. In London, bike racks will be installed by May on buses on the Adelaide, Highbury, Oxford West and Wonderland routes. The racks can be folded up when not in use or down when needed for bikes. Each rack holds two bikes. Bids from manufacturers came in lower than expected, John Ford, director of transportation and planning, told the commission. Ford and Patrick Cormier, an LTC employee who cycles to work, showed commissioners the racks and discussed their merits before they made their choice. “There’s a lot of reasons why cyclists would want to transport their bikes on the bus,” said Cormier, manager of information technology. “They may have a meeting during the day that requires them to dress up, they may want to dodge a rain burst, they may want to get to a bike path without riding in heavy traffic or they may be taking their bike to an area of the city that doesn’t have bus service.” Whatever the reason, it’s a value added for transit riders, said Cormier. “It’s an addition to bus service that we didn’t have before,” he said. “Anyone paying a regular bus fare can load their bike on the rack, remove it themselves and ride the bus.”

A Few Questions-

Thank you to those who check in on the blog every once in a while, I’ve been swamped with school work lately so I haven’t had an opportunity to add any new posts! – I do however, have several projects to talk about.

I’m doing some research for a project and was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me;

-Do you take public transit?

-What do you think it would take for the common Londoner (maybe even yourself) to take public transit in London?

-How do you feel about existing high density within our city?

 -How do you think high density residential should be distributed throughout the city? What should it look like?
