A great idea, and it’s the beginning of something wonderful in the Region. Currently, Grand River CarShare has 11 cars in its fleet, and hopes to expand with these generous loans into the Cambridge area. This idea has been successful in many European cities and some more progressive cities in the US.

City council has come to an agreement with officials of Grand River Carshare, which will see the expansion of service in Cambridge.

At Monday’s general committee meeting, council members voted to provide the not-for-profit group with three loans of $10,000 each, plus interest, for the purchase of vehicles which will be used by Cambridge Grand River Carshare members.

The goal is to promote car sharing as a viable alternative to privately- owned automobiles within Waterloo Region. The group also hopes to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

Members can book the use of a vehicle for an hour, a day or more to get to appointments, do grocery shopping –and not have to buy or lease a vehicle. They drop off the vehicle at an agreed upon time and are then billed on a monthly basis based on trip logs that record time used and distances travelled.

The deal, which goes to council next Monday to be ratified, will allow Carshare to purchase a number of vehicles which will be strategically parked around the city core areas.
